Switzerland is a mountainous Central European country, home to numerous lakes, villages and the high peaks of the Alps. It may just be the most beautiful country in Europe, especially in summer. There’s something about the way the mountains still glisten with snow even into the sunniest of summer days, the turquoise lakes — all of which are amongst the cleanest in the world — the fields of alpine flowers…it just goes on and on.
The country is also known for its ski resorts and hiking trails. Banking and finance are key industries, and Swiss watches and chocolate are world renowned.
1. Zürich
Zürich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zürich. It is located in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürich. Be careful not to get lost exploring the streets of Old Town Zurich.
2. Geneva
Geneva is a city in Switzerland that lies at the southern tip of expansive Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). Surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains, the city has views of dramatic Mont Blanc. Headquarters of Europe’s United Nations and the Red Cross, it’s a global hub for diplomacy and banking. French influence is widespread, from the language to gastronomy and bohemian districts like Carouge.
3. Montreux
Montreux is a traditional resort town on Lake Geneva. Nestled between steep hills and the lakeside, it’s known for its mild microclimate and the Montreux Jazz Festival, held in July. The town’s promenade is lined with flowers, sculptures, Mediterranean trees and grand Belle Époque buildings.
4. Lucerne
Lucerne, a compact city in Switzerland known for its preserved medieval architecture, sits amid snowcapped mountains on Lake Lucerne. Its colorful Altstadt (Old Town) is bordered on the north by 870m Museggmauer (Musegg Wall), a 14-century rampart. The covered Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), built in 1333, links the Aldstadt to the Reuss River’s right bank.
5. Interlaken
While it’s not one of Switzerland’s busiest area, this place is full of adventure. Interlaken is a great place for mountain-related sports. The beautiful scenery and number of pubs make this a popular backpacker destination during the summertime. If you come here during the winter, expect snowy roads, ice-topped mountains, and lots of fondue cafes with outdoor seating that comes fully-equipped with warm blankets to keep you warm.
6. Bern
Bern is my favorite city in Switzerland. It’s small, covered in cobblestones streets and medieval buildings, set along a beautiful river, and close to the mountains. I loved it. You could just wander the city for days feeling like you’re back in the 1600s. Because it is so small, you only really need a few days here but, while you are here, be sure to try some of the international food, chocolate (Toblerone was started here), and all the craft beer popping up at the new bars through the city.
7. Basel
Basel is a great city for any traveler making their way through Switzerland. You can indulge in its diverse cuisine, float down the Rhine River, or spend time walking its historic city center with its riveting museums, zoo, and extravagant cathedrals. Plus, they have a ton of festivals throughout the year. It’s a pretty small (but super beautiful) city so I don’t think you need more than a few days here.
